LOVELL — Students from the Lovell Lego Robotics team competed against 25 other teams made up of students ages 9-14, at the FIRST Lego League Challenge state qualifiers on Nov. 17, in Jay.
Each team designs, builds, and programs an autonomous Lego Mindstorms robot, to complete a variety of tasks. No remote controls are permitted.
This year’s theme is space exploration. Teams also research a real-life problem facing astronauts, and present their solutions.
The Lovell Lego Robotics team Maks Bondarev, Sofie Bondarev and Oren Monteith, came in first for their research project presentation, describing an innovative approach to stocking an all-purpose spaceship repair kit. The team also scored very well on teamwork skills.
The team has been learning robot-building and programming skills since September, meeting at the Charlotte Hobbs Library, with coaches Phoebe Monteith, Jodi Smith, and Declan Brosnan. Hunting Corporation and the St. Germain family provided major funding.
The Robotics Club at Fryeburg Academy provided both encouragement and several spare robot kits.
The group hopes to expand and include more students in the future, and is therefore looking for donations for more laptops and robot kits. Contact Hobbs Library at 207-925-3177.
