Ceramics artist Verrill is Gallery 302’s December guest

BRIDGTON — Artist Rebecca May Verrill is the December guest artist at Gallery 302. Her works will be on display Dec. 4 through Dec. 31.
A reception for Verrill will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the gallery, 112 Main St.

At 4 p.m., before the reception, Verrill will discuss her work and speak with gallery guests about her philosophy and techniques. The event is free and open to the public.
A native of Otisfield, Verrill is a potter who is based in Portland. For more than 20 years, she has been working with clay, firing kilns and teaching others. She holds a masters of fine arts in ceramics degree from the State University of New York-New Paltz.
Over time, Verrill’s work has reflected her love of creating from nature, using native clays, both red and white earthenware. She has been inspired by organic plant life set against a metropolitan landscape of brick and stone and is interested in sustainability – a lower impact on the planet. Rebecca works on a potter’s wheel, creating contemporary ceramics which employ a variety of techniques of layered design. Many of her color choices (turquoise, terra cotta, yellow and green) reflect the hues of the colorful Southwest, where she taught art, built and fired wood kilns, and developed clay and fiber-ware work in collaboration with other artists.
Verrill’s unique designs are from her hand cut stencils, carved and embellished on her pieces. She has taught basket weaving in Norway, Maine, and created vessels for Norway Brewing Company, among many varied creative projects. She hopes that those who see and collect her work will enjoy it as much as she enjoys creating it.
