LEEDS — The Leeds Historical Society has published a booklet based on the program presented this summer on D.F.D.Russell, M.D. The booklet, which is $5 and benefits the historical society, is available at the Town Office, 8 Community Drive.
Russell, (1879-1975) was the town’s longtime family physician. Many at the June 2 program shared their memories of him. Also on display at the town office are Leeds commemorative pottery, note cards, antique Leeds maps, Leeds histories and the Leeds One Room School booklet. The historical society this spring will host a program by Lew Alessio about Lane’s Store, which was located in Leeds Center. Although various people have items from the old store, there don’t seem to be any photographs of the interior. Anyone who has a photo and would be willing to allow the LHS to scan it, is asked to contact Pam Bell at 207-933-4121. This should be a fascinating and entertaining program, so watch for further announcements.
The historical society also wants to thank everyone who came out for the Veterans Day observance at the Leeds Veterans Memorial. Despite the chilly day, it was wonderfully attended by veterans and other adults and children, including Daisy Scouts, who laid a wreath at the monument and members of the Leeds Central School Student Council, who raised the flag and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. Jim Dacyczyn spoke about why he had enlisted in the Navy, Rick Ness led the group in prayer, and Barbara Grant led the group in singing “America the Beautiful,” and “America (My Country ‘Tis of Thee).”
