LEWISTON — Community Credit Union this year presented the Auburn Police Activities League and the Greene Baptist Church Food Pantry with checks for $250 as part of the Maine Credit Union Leagues Campaign for Ending Hunger initiative.
Both donations were made in June.
In Auburn, each day the Auburn PAL Center hosts between 50 and 90 children. The PAL Center is a self-sustaining program supported by donations, fundraisers and through Chef Tom Poulin’s Science thru Cooking Program where students cater events. Many students’ only meals for the day are those received at school and from the PAL Center.
“The PAL Board of Directors is grateful for Community Credit Union’s generous donation,”, said PAL secretary Rita Beaudry “This donation will be used to leverage funds for the purchase of food from Good Shepherd Food Bank to provide nutritious snacks and meals to children of the program. For many of the children in the program, these snacks and meals are the only food they will receive until the next day.”
The Greene Baptist Church Food Pantry serves approximately 75 families a month and also gives out about 20 Thanksgiving baskets each November. The food pantry is open to residents of Greene from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of every month.
Maine Credit Unions have raised more than $8 million since 1990 to help end hunger in Maine. At the end of each year, 100 percent of the money raised by each individual participating credit union is given back to that credit union to be distributed to hunger organization in their community. In 2017, participating Maine Credit Unions raised a record total of more than $740,000 for the Ending Hunger Campaign.
