AUGUSTA — On Nov. 11, 1918, after four years and millions of lives lost, an armistice between Germany and the Allies was enacted, an important first step to bringing an end to World War I.
The date is now celebrated as Veterans Day, a day to honor all veterans. The armistice centennial offers a chance to look back on Mainers’ contributions from the war zone to the home front.
The Maine State Museum, Maine State Library and the Maine State Archives will hold a free event that looks back at the important time in history and the debt owed to veterans.
The event is 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Maine State Cultural Building, 230 State St.
The Armistace commemoration event will include:
11 a.m. to 1 p.m. — World War I re-enactors demonstrating military drills and inspections in the Cultural Building Archives.
1:30 p.m. — Armistice Day commemoration ceremony, including remarks by Maj. Gen. Douglas Farnham, adjutant general for the Maine National Guard and Cpt. Jonathan Bratten, historian for the Maine National Guard, as well others.
2:30 p.m. — Ceremonial wreath laying.
It will also be the last day to see the Maine State Museum’s World War I exhibit, “Over there, Down Home: Mainers and World War I.”
The Maine State Museum is also celebrating all Maine Veterans who now may access the museum free of charge upon showing a Maine Resident Lifetime Veteran Park Pass.
The commemoration is a special Sunday opening of the museum. Its regular hors are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. For more information, call 207-287-2301 or visit www.mainestatemuseum.org.
