AUGUSTA — The 21 annual Stand Down for homeless veterans, sponsored by VA Maine Healthcare System, will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1 VA Center Togus Theater, Building 210.
The VA and its partners have identified 133 homeless veterans throughout Maine and are committed to ending their homelessness, the VA said in a news release.
The Stand Down is to support the homeless veterans and to engage those who have not yet presented for care or not aware of the services available to them. The Stand Down welcomes veterans to be welcomed into the VA community and be connected to needed services and resources to end their homelessness and provide ongoing stability.
Veterans will arrive at the Togus campus via free transportation from around the state. Hot coffee and breakfast will be waiting for them, as well as more than 200 staff and community volunteers to welcome them.
The highlight is always a formerly homeless veteran who is now housed, and able to share how housing or other needed services changed his or her life. The veterans will have access to showers, personal care items, free haircuts, winter clothing, new winter boots, a hot lunch and all community and VA services needed to end their homelessness.
