NORWAY — What happens when two veteran visual artists consider a concept as fluid as change? Nikki Millonzi and Peter Herley used this idea as a jumping off point that developed into their new show, “Forever Changing,” at the Matolscy Art Center, 480 Main St.
The opening will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and the closing will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26.
In between, the gallery will be open from noon to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays for the show. Both artists began with mostly previous work, unfinished or unsuccessful. As they looked through fresh eyes the pieces became transformed through the reworking, cutting and painting process.
For Millonzi the flowing colors of an abstract Madonna and child began to recall the night sky. From a two dimensional piece a three dimensional assemblage emerged evoking the magnificence of the full moon.
Herley awoke one night from an intensely vivid dream about a long lost lady friend. Facebook helped his search and they reconnected in a new way. This was the beginning of the Mermaid Series.
Both artists have been active in their communities, showing their work and helping move the arts forward. Millonzi was an art teacher for many years and most recently facilitated The Fare Share Co-op’s Community Mosaic Project.
Herley, newer to the area, was part of the art scene in Eugene, Ore., and in Portland. The Western Maine Art Group is a nonprofit organization, serving the arts in the area since 1962.
