Maine State Museum hosts Sukkot story and craft hour Sept. 29

AUGUSTA — The Maine STate Musem will host a Sukkot story and craft hour to celebrate the Jewish harvest-time holiday. The event, part of the exhibit “Maine + Jewish: Two Centuries,” will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the museum, 230 State St.

The event will feature “The Vanishing Gourds: A Sukkot Mystery,” written by Susan Axe-Bronk and illustrated by Marta Monelli. The event is free with the price of museum admission. Thousands of years ago Jewish people wandered from place to place in the desert. They built temporary shelters called sukkahs that were easy to put up and take down again, and carry around.
The holiday of Sukkot helps everyone remember what life was like long ago and is also an opportunity to give thanks for all the good foods the earth provides.
Admission to the museum is $3 for those between the ages of 19 and 61, $2 for those between 6 and 18 or 62 and older. Children under 6 get in free. Maximum charge for families is $10. For more information, call 207-287-2301 or visit www.mainestatemuseum.org.
