AUGUSTA — Audrey McDonnell pinned the Eagle Scout medal on her son, Eric McDonnell, at St. Monica’s Hall Friday, July 6, during a ceremony honoring his attainment of scouting’s highest award.
McDonnell is a member of Boy Scout Troop 603 and one of 20 Scouts in the area to earn the Eagle Scout rank this year.
According to District Director Matthew Mower, there were 42 Eagles presented in the local Kennebec Valley District last year.
Approximately 40 people attended the ceremony, including a representative from U.S. Sen. Susan Collins.
Each Eagle Scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, serve in a leadership position in the troop, display Scout spirit and perform a significant project to benefit the community. Eric designed and built three attractive cedar benches and a picnic table for seniors and others to enjoy while walking on the Rail Trail. He did this with the cooperation and approval of Augusta Age-Friendly — a committee of community members devoted to making the city a livable community for all ages.
“After high school, I want to go to college for computer science or engineering and get a job in that line of work,” Eric said. He is part of Cony High School’s math team, Spanish club and outing club. “I enjoy camping with Scouts, playing video games, playing tennis, swimming and reading.”
