BELGRADE — The Belgrade Public Library has a full slate of authors and events lined up for July and August.
All library programs are free and open to the public, and unless otherwise noted, are at the library, 24 Depot St.
Author Greg Westrich will discuss his top 10 hikes in Maine from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 11. Westrich’s discussion includes a slideshow. Books will be available for sale and light refreshments will be served.
Mad Science of Maine will explore the science of sounds from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 17, at the Center for All Seasons, Route 27.
Author Mark Alan Leslie will discuss the rise and fall of the Ku Klux Klan in Maine, 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, at the library. The KKK took root in Maine in the 1920s, and still makes headlines in Maine today — including in Belgrade. When the KKK held its first state conclave in a forest outside Waterville in 1923, nearly 15,000 attended, and many towns had active claverns. Leslie’s books will be available for sale and light refreshments will be served.
Kennebec and Somerset District Attorney Meaghan Maloney and Maine Game Warden Terry Hughes will discuss the case of Christopher Knight from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 8. Knight, dubbed the North Pond Hermit by the media, lived for 27 years undetected in the woods of Smithfield and Rome, until he was arrested in April 2013. Maloney and Hughes will discuss the search into his past and the legal ramifications of his actions through the Maine criminal justice system as well as the impact on the communities surrounding his campsite. Light refreshments will be served.
Cherwonki will discuss the world of arthropods 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 14, at the Center for All Seasons, Route 27. The discussion will look at the forms and functions of different groups of insects and explore fascinating adaptations essential for survival such as mimicry, camouflage, armor and venom. There will be live specimens, displays, models and activities.
Maine author Monica Wood will speak at the library from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22. Wood, who is from Mexico, Maine, will talk about the rocky road to publication as an author, including her successes and her challenges along the way throughout her writing career. Her books include “When We Were the Kennedys” and “The One in a Million Boy.” Books will be available for sale and light refreshments will be served.
Astrophotographer Mike Taylor will speak at the library from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29. Observing and photographing the features of the night sky is an awe-inspiring experience that so few people ever get to enjoy. Taylor will discuss scouting, photographing and processing night sky images. Light refreshments will be served.
