RANGELEY – The Maine Conservation Corps dedicated a day of service to Rangeley Lake Heritage Trust’s Greenvale parcel on Rangeley Lake’s Greenvale Cove in early June.
The RLHT staff and MCC members were joined by volunteers on June 6 to establish public water access trails and picnicking sites.
The sandy bottom in Rangeley’s Greenvale Cove is well-known locally. Each summer boaters anchor and raft up for an idyllic Maine afternoon. The shallow cove is the pristine place to let kids be kids and for adults to relax.
In early 2017, the trust was bestowed the Greenvale parcel by the Geller family. The trust has taken the last year to explore the parcel, meet the neighbors and ponder all that it could be, the organization said in a news release, adding, “Turns out the 15-acre property has a lot to offer our community.”
Historically Greenvale was a landing for steamboats, a place where visitors crossed paths. In keeping in that spirit, RLHT is raising money to provide a public dock, along with establishing an outhouse and picnic sites, and reestablishing the trails that lead from South Shore Drive to the water access area.
Water access improvements aren’t just about getting to the water. They also provide amenities to recreationalists on the water, looking for an outhouse or place to go to shore. Throughout the summer RLHT will fundraise to provide picnic tables, an outhouse, a public dock, and the directional and interpretive signage for visitors. From funding to volunteer time, this project will be ongoing throughout the summer and needs the community’s support.
