Jun. 272018

WATERVILLE — More than 400 people are expected to take the soccer 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, July 15, in a continuous soccer game that will raise money for ShineOnCass.

The charitable non-profit organization was established by the Charette family to educate, inspire and empower youth to shine their own light through volunteer charitable activities and honors Cassidy Charette, who was killed in a hayride incident in 2014.
Charette wore the number 11 jersey and was a midfielder for Messalonskee High School.
The third annual “Kick Around the Clock for Cass” will be held at Thomas College’s Smith Field; the rain date is July 22.
Teams of 11 to 15 people register to play soccer for 60 minutes in designated time slots throughout the day to keep the time clock running for 11 continuous hours. Players pay a $10 registration fee and will receive a commemorative “Kick Around the Clock for Cass” t-shirt. Proceeds from the event will support the ShineOnCass Foundation,
This year’s event will welcome youth players from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to play free “mini games” and learn soccer skills on the adjacent turf field. Students in grades kindergarten through third will play 11 a.m. to noon, and grades 4 and older noon to 1 p.m. Prior registration is not required for youth activities.
Riley Field and Emily Hogan, Cassidy’s classmates from Messalonskee High School Class of 2016, are helping the foundation organize the event again this year to support the work inspired by Cassidy and to honor their friend.
“It has been almost four years since her passing, and yet her spirit is still very much alive in our community,” said Field. “So many people look forward to this event each year. It brings everyone together who love and miss Cass and supports the things that were important to her.”
Students from area high schools, current and alumni athletic teams as well as families and teams from local summer camps are registered to play.
Messalonskee High School girls soccer team will play against Cassidy’s former teammates from Central Maine United Premiere Soccer during the 11th hour from 7 to 8 p.m. Spectators are welcome all day. To register a team, volunteer or sponsor, call 207-314-6996, email shineoncass@gmail.com or visit the Shine On Cass Facebook page.
