RANGELEY — Natasha Haley is the 2018 winner of the Seasonal Friends of Rangeley Scholarship, a multi-year stipend totaling $3,500 helping to pay her college tuition.
Kyle LaRochelle won the Rangeley Lakes Area Legacy Scholarship of $500. Both awards were announced during the Rangeley Lakes Regional School graduation June 9.
In selecting the scholarship recipients, the directors of the program noted that both students compiled outstanding scholastic records, received numerous academic and other awards, and held class and other leadership positions. Haley and LaRochelle also were very active in the area of community service, which is a major criterion used in selecting recipients of these scholarships.
The Seasonal Friends of Rangeley Scholarship, now in its 22nd year, is funded by visitors to, and seasonal residents of, the Rangeley region. The Rangeley Lakes Area Legacy Scholarship is supported by permanent residents of the region. Contributions to this fund may be made in honor or memory of a person, living or deceased.
Among common themes included in the scholarship applications submitted by both students were appreciation for the attributes of Rangeley as a small town in which to grow up, and a strong desire to be of service to others.” The people of Rangeley will always be there to help and support others who are in need,” Haley noted, while LaRochelle said people in the community “support each other when times are good and when times are bad.”
Both also recognized they felt and fulfilled a responsibility to younger students at Rangeley Lakes Elementary School, which included serving as mentors.They also referred to their goal of serving as a positive role model for students in lower grades.
Each earned a number of academic honors, took some college-level classes and excelled at various sports. Both filled leadership roles in classrooms and athletics. Coincidentally, both plan to pursue a college degree in business.
Haley served as class president during all four years of high school, an officer of several committees and clubs, and captain of sports teams. She will attend the University of Southern Maine and, she wrote, hopes in her post-graduate life to continue her goal “to help others.”
LaRochelle’s long list of community service activities includes helping people in age groups from young students to the elderly, taking part in events ranging from roadside clean-up to clearing hiking trails, and for working as a volunteer at various town events. He will study at the University of Maine at Farmington.
