SIDNEY — Linda Snow McLoon will present a portrait of the Googins family through their letters at the July meeting of the Sidney Historical Society.
The lives of various siblings of Maine’s Googins family are described through their letters to their brother, William Hayes Googins.
The meeting will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 10, at the Sidney Grange Hall, 2986 Middle Road.
In letters to William Googins, Lucy Googins tells about her life working in one of the textile mills on Factory Island in Saco; Albion Googins describes being a farmer in the 19th century in Hiram; Lydia passes on many of the details of attending school in mid-19th century Maine in Harpswell before leaving with her husband to begin life in the west; and the youngest sibling, Charles Sumner Googins, writes to his brother while serving in the 5th Maine and Signal Corps during the Civil War.
Guest speaker McLoon grew up on Salmon Lake in the Belgrade Lakes Region, where her family operated the summer camp, Whisperwood, in North Belgrade.
She is the author of two young adult novels, “Crown Prince” and “Crown Prince Challenged.” There is no charge for admission, though donations are always welcome. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the program.
