WATERVILLE — Delta Ambulance will be a gold-level sponsor for the 20th year in a row during the Trek Across Maine bicycle fundraiser, which takes place June 15 to 17.
Some 2,000 registered bicyclists and 500 volunteers participate in the funrdraiser for the American Lung Association of the Northeast. Delta Ambulance coordinates the medical response team.
Cyclists, numbering slightly less than the population of Hallowell, will be stretched out over 50 to 60 miles each day and some may encounter problems with accidents and physical difficulties related to the daily weather or their personal capacities.
The Delta team, which consists of EMTs, paramedics and other medical personnel on bicycles and in four “Medic vans” fully equipped as advanced life support ambulances will communicate through a central communications link — MEDCOM trailer. The trailer, a vital component in Trek communications, is equipped with two-way radios, cellphones and amateur radio, along with computer assisted mapping and satellite locators in the key response vehicles. Delta also developed the Trek Contingency Plan so things remain in place for a worst-case scenario.
“Our goal is to help Trekkers stay in the ride” said Delta’s Bill McKenna. “But, if circumstances warrant, we will transport riders to the nearest Rest Stop or, if necessary, to the hospital via the local ambulance services. The Trek has been successful and we are glad to be a part of its success. Lung health is essential”
The Delta Team is made up of volunteers and and the effort is supported by Darling’s Auto Mall, Yankee Communications and Verizon Wireless.
