TURNER — The Bear Pond Improvement Association has special programs planned to celebrate its 60th anniversary.
“Think of it, sixty years ago some very forward looking, environmentally enlighten people came together to protect and enhance the Bear Pond basin,” said Henry Pelletier, president of the association.
“They worked together to acquire the land and water rights to build a dam. They developed a spirit of working together that has lasted to this day.”
The story of the association’s 60 years has been put together in a book, “The History of Bear Pond,” by Mary Wallace, which includes many photos.
“Mary has spent many long hours along with volunteers who have given hours to researching years of past meeting minutes and legal documents, to bring this book to the people of Bear Pond. It is a story of people who had an idea and worked together and gave of themselves,” Pelletier said.
The 60th anniversary theme will be part of two main events this year, the Fourth of July Boat Parade and the Bear Pond Fun Day Celebration, which is 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 21, and open to residents of Bear Pond and Littler Bear Pond. The ponds are in Turner and Hartford.
The boat parade will have many themes, and Wallace’s boat will have a crew of past Bear Pond Association presidents.
The Fun Day Theme will be past present and future. There will be a poker run the evening before. Also, on Fun Day there a hand-crafted plaque will be raffled and there will be discussion of the past, present and future of Bear Pond. This year there will be free popcorn, and other surprises.
Bear Pond Improvement Association has environmental projects, a newsletter, a new web site packed with information about Bear Pond and Little Bear Pond, and other projects for those who would like to work with their friends and neighbors.
