BRIDGTON — The Lakes Region Substance Abuse Coalition said it wants to recognize those who supported April’s Drug Take Back Day, including law enforcement agency partners, Bridgton and Fryeburg police departments and Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the individuals who safely disposed of unused prescription medication at three sites in the Lakes Region — Bridgton Community Center, Fryeburg Rite Aid and Raymond Fire Department.
According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, last months event brought in 44 tons of expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs at 580 collection sites across New England. The DEA estimated 10 percent of the drugs collected were opioid pain killers. Officials reported Maine had the greatest amount of drugs collected at 28,500 pounds — more than any of the other states, collected (Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Conneticut, Vermont and Rhode Island).
Drug Take Back events make homes and communities safer by removing medication that’s highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse. If you missed this opportunity and have prescription drugs you’d like to safely dispose of, bring them to the disposal drop box at the Brigdton Police Department lobby, 8 Iredale St., available Monday through Friday from 8am-4:30 p.m.
Needles, syringes or liquids cannot be accepted; alternatively, a doctor’s office may be able to handle those items. The take-back is completely confidential and there is no need to peel or blackout labels.
