ORONO — Messalonskee High School chorus teacher Pamela Rhein recently received the Maine Educator Appreciation Award from the Maine Music Educators Association at the All-State Music Festival.
The group is composed of all the band, chorus and orchestra teachers in the state; the award is given in recognition “for exceptional support and outstanding contributions to the advancement of music education in the schools of Maine.”
Rhein is a dedicated educator and vocal supporter of music education at all grade levels, according to the assocation. She frequently brings her students out into the community to contribute to various civic events or simply to share the gift of song with nursing home residents.
Rhein also was a driving force behind the Regional School Unit 18 album “Songs of Darkness and Hope,” which was placed on the nomination ballot for a Grammy Award last fall.
She and the Messalonskee High School Tri-M Music Honor Society students recently finished mailing CDs to Holocaust and Human Rights Centers across the country.
It was, in part, for her work on this project that Rhein received the 2017 Distinguished Choral Teacher Award from the Maine chapter of the American Choral Directors Association.
