LEWISTON — District Attorneys Andrew Robinson and Maeghan Maloney will discuss the case of Christopher Knight, dubbed by media the North Pond Hermit, at the Lewiston Public Library, Monday, May 21.
The discussion, which will include discussion of the book “The Stranger in the Woods: the Extraordinary Story of the Last True Hermit,” will be at 6 p.m. in the library’s Callahan Hall.
“The Stranger in the Woods,” by Michael Finkel, chronicles the story of Knight, who lived alone in the woods in Smithfield and Rome for 27 years, subsisting largely on items and food he stole from seasonal camps, homes and businesses. He was sentenced to an alternative court program after his conviction, and Robinson and Maloney will discuss his case, the program and similar programs in Lewiston and Auburn.
Robinson is the district attorney for Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties. He started in as an assistant district attorney in 1999 and was later promoted to deputy district attorney before being elected district attorney in 2014. He graduated from the University of Maine and in 1997 from the University of Maine School of Law.
Maloney is the Kennebec County district attorney, which comprises the area where Knight lived in the woods, and also Somerset County DA. As a child, she lived in the Tall Pines lowi-ncome housing project in Lewiston until her family moved to Turner, where she graduated from Leavitt High School in 1989. She received scholarships to attend Swarthmore College and Harvard Law School. After graduation, she worked as a prosecutor in Portland, Ore., starting in the trial unit until she was promoted to run the forfeiture unit. Maloney spent a year in Asia on a Luce Fellowship, working to stop domestic violence, and then returned home to Maine. In Maine, she worked as an assistant attorney general before being elected to the Maine Legislature.
