Boy Scouts Pine Tree Council honors former radio host James

AUGUSTA– Jon James, retired radio show host who spent a career on the airwaves at 92 Moose, has been named the 2018 Citizen of the Year by the Boy Scouts of America Pine Tree Council.
The award recognizes individuals who make exceptional contributions to their local community, while exemplifying and living by the twelve points of the Boy Scout Law — being trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, kind, courteous, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.

Roger Pomerleau, chairman of the annual Augusta Friends of Scouting Campaign, announced that $13,000 was raised at a dinner honoring James in late March at Le Club Calumet.
James is the ninth Mainer to receive the award. For decades, he has donated his time to numerous fundraisers and has served as the “Voice of the Valley” on local prime time radio. He is a true celebrity who is well-loved by his fans. It is not uncommon for hordes of people to turn out to any event or fundraiser where James appears. Literacy is one of his passions and he can be seen frequently reading to children at local schools. “Reading is important, but don’t just read for assignments- read for yourself,” said James, “by reading, you can learn how to cook at a restaurant, or fight a fire, or how to arrest someone. You can learn so much by reading books. Reading can take you anywhere you want to go, anyplace you can imagine.”
Pine Tree Council serves the nearly 6,000 youth and adult families in western, central and southern Maine.
