TURNER — Stacey Keniston of Turner recently completed a 15-week online course through Anaheim University to become Teaching Speakers of Other Languages certified.
The course offers a balance of current theory and practical experience in second language instructional methods. This class teaches foundational knowledge and real-world skill.
Keniston was last year’s recipient of the Maine Adult Education Association scholarship for teachers to enhance and fine-tune their instructional techniques, and she chose to gain this certification as part of her well-rounded practice.
The TESOL core certification course provides a base knowledge in teaching English as a second language with focus on methods and approaches. Additionally, TESOL coursework teaches how to plan a lesson with authentic material students will love and activities that don’t feel like a task. The TESOL communication approach is to have students do the talking.
Keniston decided to apply for the scholarship through MAEA to take the certification course because she wanted to acquire more skills to help her students become increasingly more successful. Keniston explains, as a result of this course, “I had to retrain my thought process and, instead of focusing on only reading, I discovered the power of learning was in their listening and speaking skills,” adding, “I wanted to focus less on what I could teach them to help them learn, but more on what they could teach me about their strengths and weaknesses.”
