AUBURN — Girls in Androscoggin County will get a chance to explore trade fields traditionally open to men at the Totally Trades Conference, which is being held Friday, May 25, at Central Maine Community College.
The hands-on, half-day conference is designed to encourage girls to consider careers in fields traditionally populated by men and will bring together more than one hundred ninth-graders from schools in Androscoggin County. The conference is a collaboration of New Ventures Maine, Lewiston Regional Technical School and CMCC.
Workshops will range from building construction, electricity, plumbing and heavy equipment, to law enforcement, automotive technology, EMT, radiology and welding. Jim Horn, aspirations coordinator for Edward Little High School, initiated the effort to bring Totally Trades to this area for the first time last year, according to a news release.
The event provides an opportunity for female students to explore careers they may have not considered for themselves, organizers said.
Totally Trades has been taking place in other parts of Maine for the past 16 years, but this is the second year it has taken place in the Lewiston-Auburn area. Funding for the activity is made possible through funding and services provided by the Maine Department of Transportation, Maine Department of Education/CTE, and other local sponsors.
Participating high schools include Auburn, Lewiston, Leavitt, Sabattus, Poland, Buckfiel, and Lisbon.
