BELGRADE — Winterberry Farm on Route 27 will host its annual sheep shearing and May Day celebration from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, April 29, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the farm, 538 Augusta Road.
The free event will feature family-friendly activities, and a chance to explore the grounds,
It is also an opportunity to learn more about an animal-powered, certified organic, family-operated farm.
Visitors of all ages can participate in traditional dancing around the Maypole, with authentic fiddle accompaniment, and watch the sheep being sheared and spinners demonstrating their craft at their wheels.
There will also be an opportunity to help sort the sheared wool and try their own hand at the spinning wheel and weaving looms set up with wool, fabric and natural materials on hand.
Farmer Mary Perry encourages visitors to make a fun day of it, visiting the baby lambs, seeing the other farm animals, and checking out what’s growing in the greenhouses.
Sturdy shoes or boots are advisable, and be sure to bring a blanket for a picnic — box lunches will be available for purchase in the farm stand store.
Also for sale will be Winterberry Farm freshly-picked flower bouquets, parsnips and greens, wool yarn and hand knitted socks made from their farm sheep, and a wide variety of preserved and baked goods, including Perry’s homemade pies.
