NORWAY – Stephens Memorial Hospital is hosting a variety of health and safety programs in the coming weeks, dealing with everything from fiddleheads and fire extinguishers, to breast feeding and CPR.
Workshops will be in the at Ripley Medical Office Building, 193 Main St. unless otherwise noted. Registration for all the classes is required, at www.wmh.coursestorm.com. For more information call 743-1562, ext. 6896.

All About Fiddleheads: Kelly Hodgkins, from Western Foothills Land Trust, discusses how to identify fiddleheads of the tasty ostrich fern and prepare them as a side dish. Harvested in the early spring, fiddleheads are a Maine delicacy. Finding and preparing the young fronds of the ostrich fern can be a challenge. Class members will go outside to forage for fiddleheads and sauté them on site, weather permitting. If the weather is inclement, the class will be indoors in the Harper Conference Center, with pre-picked fiddleheads to aid with identification and an inside cooking class.
This class will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 21, The cost is $5 per person.
Breastfeeding Class: The Family Birthplace is holding a class for both new and experienced mothers from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 25, in the Harper Conference Center. Registered nurse Gail Martel will lead the class, which will cover the facts of breastfeeding, and help to dispel the myths about it. She will teach skills for successful breastfeeding, as some infants are born knowing what to do and some need gentle coaching. Some mothers may take more naturally to breastfeeding while others require more support. The class will also discuss support services available to breastfeeding mothers.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends and encourages breastfeeding for all babies and the staff at The Family Birthplace are well trained, anticipate needs and are there to help. The class is free. For more information, call the Family Birthplace at 744-6151.
Know How to Use Your Fire Extinguisher: This course of instruction is not designed to turn participants into firefighters, but rather equip them with the knowledge and skills to detect and extinguish a fire only when it is safe to do so. Norway Fire Chief, Dennis Yates will offer life-saving tips that could be useful if a fire breaks out in your home. Through hands-on training with fire simulations in a safe learning environment, the professional instructors will educate you on the basics of fire extinguishers, i.e. when and how to use a fire extinguisher, the different types of fire extinguishers, the different types of fires and fire extinguisher maintenance.
The class will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 Wednesday, April 25, at the Norway Fire Department. 19 Danforth St. There is no cost to participate.
American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED: The class will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3, in the Harper Conference Center. Heartsaver CPR AED is a video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult and child CPR and AED use, infant CPR, and how to relieve choking in adults, children and infants. It teaches skills with the AHA’s research-proven practice-while-watching technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback, and guide the students’ learning of skills.
The course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements. The cost is $20 per person.
