WALES — Sixth-grade social studies teacher Zack Miller offered to sacrifice his curly locks for a good cause. Oak Hill Middle School’s Lego Robotics Team adviser agreed to allow the advisory group raising the most money for the Lego Robotics Club to shave his head any way they wanted.
Miller gathered the entire middle school in the gymnasium in late February and told the crowd the advisory group donating the most money to help his team attend the Robotics Track Meet Association would be allowed to shave his head in front of the entire school.
He agreed to keep it that way for one week.
The fundraiser lasted about a week, give or take a few snow days. Some advisory groups, in a fierce competition to win the right to style their favorite teacher’s hair, joined forces and combined their earnings.
Sixth-grade writing teacher Dave Mulcahy’s advisory group raised the most money, $110. Advisers Allyson Collins, Andrew Oliver and Jen Richardson pooled their earnings to raise that total to $195.
The school raised $405 for the Lego Robotics Club, which is made up of 20 students. Advisory groups, with students in grades six to eight, meet every morning from 7:25-7:50 a.m.
Each group is comprised of about 10 students, and the goal is to make connections and build relationships. Last fall, 10 students competed in the first Lego League meet; this spring, 10 will attend the Robotics Track Meet.
Lego Robotics is a chance for students to use STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) to solve real-world problems and to learn how to program an autonomous robot to complete tasks. In the fall, they competed in the First Lego League against teams from around the state and now have a chance to compete against the world.
Miller’s dedication to his students, his club, and his super sporty poof of curly black hair is a testament to how much he cares about kids and their interests.
Knowing he is a die-hard Yankees fan, the winning advisory teams carved a B for Boston in the back of his head, which, as promised, he wore for a week before shaving it all off.
The competition will take place Saturday, May 19, at Messalonskee Middle School, 33 School Bus Drive, Oakland.
