WATERVILLE – MaineGeneral has received recognition for its National Diabetes Prevention Program from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
MaineGeneral demonstrated and met rigorous outcome criteria to receive the designation, hospital officials said in a news release.
The diabetes prevention program exceeds the CDC standards for outcomes such as weight loss and program participation.
MaineGeneral adopted the national program six years ago to help those at risk of diabetes. One out of three American adults are pre-diabetic and nine out of 10 do not know they have it.
Key components of the program include: CDC-approved curriculum with lessons, handouts and other resources; a lifestyle coach specially trained to lead the program; and a support group of people with similar goals and challenges.
MaineGeneral’s program is one of eight in Maine receiving full recognition.
