Seed curator will speak about gardening at Oakland library

OAKLAND — Will Bonsall will be the guest speaker 4 p.m. on Tuesday, March 20 and 27, at 4 p.m. at the Oakland Public Library, 18 Church St.
Bonsall is known nationally and internationally as the foremost seed curator in the country from his farm in Industry, where he keeps his seed varieties numbering in the hundreds for potatoes alone.

His first presentation will be about growing root crops and lesser-known or grown vegetables; the second presentation will focus on growing wheat, oats and barley varieties easy for gardeners to process. He will include a discussion on “pseudo grains,” such as buckwheat, amaranth and quinoa.
These sessions will last about an hour, followed by questions and answers. Also, he will have copies of his book available for purchase.
He is the author of “The Eco-Efficient Garden and Homestead: Using Plant-Based Fertility to Grow Vegetables, Pulses, Grains and Perennial Crop Foods.”
