SOUTH PARIS — University of Maine Cooperative Extension Oxford Hills Homeschool Robotics 4-H Pipe Patrol team won second place at the FIRST LEGO League state competition in Augusta in December.
The team has been invited to represent Maine at the FIRST LEGO League LEGOLAND California International Open in Carlsbad, Ca., May 18-20.
Team members, ages 11-14 years-old, worked to build and program a robot to successfully complete as many missions as possible in 3.5 minutes and worked to identify a real-world problem related to hydrodynamics.
The team focused on water pipes freezing and bursting in cold weather, especially in older houses and mobile homes. After conversations with local experts, including Norway fire chief Dennis Yates, the team made a list of current solutions then worked to develop an idea of their own that includes using heat tape, a sensor with Wi-Fi alert and a solar panel as a backup energy source.
Team members Amber Lynch, Joshua Wessels, Nathan Cooper and Lucas Yates are now working to further develop their project idea and presentation, improve their robot and raise the funds needed to travel with their coaches to California. The team will be hosting an indoor yard sale March 9-10 at the South Paris Baptist Church.
