AUGUSTA — The Family Violence Project has an ongoing need for volunteer advocates to help answer its 24-Hour Helpline for those affected by domestic violence.
Those who are good listeners, comfortable talking on the phone and have a passion for helping others are ideal candidates.
Volunteer advocates on the helpline work once a month from home. Family Violence Project offers free training that prepares volunteers. A staff person is always available to assist volunteers by phone as well.
Participants in the training will learn about the complex issue of domestic violence, the staff and services of Family Violence Project, and how to talk with callers and help them create safety plans. Although successful completion of training is required for to volunteer, no other experience is necessary.
Family Violence Project’s next volunteer training will be held in Augusta from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays April 3 through May 22.
Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, complete an interview and pass background/reference checks before being accepted into the training. Deadline for completing the interview is Friday, March 23.
While the is free, a $25 donation is asked from those who are able to provide it to help cover the cost of background checks. The inability to make a donation will not prevent a person from participating.
