NORWAY — Maureen Higgins, a cancer health outreach educator with the Dempsey Center, will present “The Power of Prevention” at the Cancer Resource Center of Western Maine.
The free presentation will be 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, March 15, at the center, 199 Main St.
Statistics estimate that nearly 50 percent of cancers are preventable. Higgins will discuss lifestyle changes that can reduce the risk of cancer.
The interactive presentation will focus on behavior that individuals have control over, and look at simple ways to incorporate healthy choices into everyday life, increase overall wellness and prevent chronic disease.
The workshop is one of many events, workshops and activities, including a women’s support group and men’s rally group, that the center has on its March calendar.
All programs offered by the Center are free to anyone impacted by cancer, survivors and caregivers. New visitors are welcome to stop by for information and to join in any of the activities. In case of inclement weather, when School Administrative District 17 cancels classes, activities sponsored by the Center are cancelled as well.
The center holds drop-in hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Thursday and Friday. Volunteers are available to assist with resources offered. The center provides free comfort items such as port protectors, wigs, hats, scarves and pillows. There is also a lending library and informational pamphlets. The center is a comfortable place to enjoy a cup of coffee or tea, chat with a volunteer or take time for yourself by participating in scheduled activities. Activities such as coloring, knitting or games are not on our calendar, but are available at all times the center is open.
