LIVERMORE FALLS — The General Federation of Women’s Clubs/Livermore Falls Women’s Club, held a brunch in January with 15 members attending. Muriel Bowerman gave a history of the lap-robe project, which is coming to an end. Over the past several years, members have made lap robes for veterans, shut-ins, sick members and clients of Meals on Wheels.
Christine Fournier read her essay “May Basket Days and Bean Suppahs,” which was recently published in “A Living History of Western Maine.”
Connie Fournier and Lisa Townsend volunteered to represent the club at the state convention in May in a conservation challenge sponsored by a national organization called “Project Runway.” Fournier and Townsend need to create a complete outfit using reusable tote bags, not plastic. Eighty percent of the outfit must be from reusable bags.
The business meeting focused on three topics — other groups in the community they could partner with, how to increase membership, and what community service projects can they pursue. Findings will be finalized at the February meeting.
GFWC of Maine will be offering a $1,000 scholarship. Applications should be in school guidance counselors offices, but if not, those interested in applying should visit GFWC/Maine.org to download an application. Each year GFWC of Maine offers the Maude McKenzie Scholarship, named after a former state president from Orono. McKenzie was active in many local and state projects during her lifetime and had a special interest in the education of our youth.
There is also an application for Student Interest Free Loans; if your guidance counselor does not have them, you can go to GFWC/Maine. org and download an application.
