TURNER — The Turner Public Library recently announced the winners of its “Chopstick Challenge,” in which contestants were given 50 chopsticks and encouraged to construct whatever structures, tools, machines or artwork they were inspired to create.
“We had tremendous support from Tripp Middle School,” said assistant library director, Ellen Bradley. “All of the winning entries came from the school students, and we really enjoyed partnering with the teachers there.”
The Chopstick Champion award went to Willow Lausier and Mahrysa York, for their working lantern. Sponsored by Northland True Value Hardware, the champion category was award to the most useful design.
“This lantern fits what we were looking for,” said Jenny Maheu, owner of Northland True Value. “We wanted a useful object that incorporated something beyond chopsticks, and had a drawing. This one fit all those criteria.” York and Lausier included a battery-operated light, making the lantern useful, and a dimensional drawing.
Second place went to Jade Crowell and Cadence Darling for their cabin structure, complete with furniture and deck with water features. A&L Laboratories, a division of Granite State Analytics, donated a $50 cash prize to this category.
Third prize went to Kurtis Mousseau for his working catapult, earning a $50 gift card from Hannaford Bros. supermarkets.
Two $25 gift cards from Entrepro Services went to the fourth place winners — Abby Chaput and Nola Goodwin — for their holiday tree structure, and fifth place winners Ava Pratt and Lily Chabot’s artful object received a gift bag of merchandise from the University of Maine.
Kelli Burnham, library director, noted the prize donations from sponsors was an incredible show of support for the library. “Our donors were so generous; we’ve actually been able to bank some prizes away for our upcoming photography/video contest this summer.”
