READFIELD — Two historical presentations will be offered in February by Dale Potter-Clark, Readfield historian and author, including on the history of Kents Hill and the long-ago fire at Readfield Corner that changed it forever.
The first is sponsored by Maranacook Adult and Community Education and will be held at Maranacook High School, one of four courses Potter-Clark is teaching this session. The second is free and open to the public, part of the Senior Cafe at Maranacook Middle School.
“Kents Hill: From Farmland to Village,” will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, with a March 1 snow date.
The talk will cover when and how Kents Hill village changed from remote backcountry farmland to a cultural and educational center. Before 1775 there were very few people living on Kent’s Hill – the Packards and Kents were two of the first to stake their claims and buildings began to appear. The talk will cover the area’s evolution, including buildings and houses, and some of the people who lived in Kents Hill village. The talk comes with a registration fee and is one of four Potter-Clark is offering through the adult ed winter and spring. “The Day Readfield Corner Burned,” is a talk that is free and open to the public, with no fee or registration necessary, and will be held from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 26, in the Senior Cafe at Maranacook Middle School.
Readfield Corner was once a bustling business center where groceries, shoes, clothing, millinery, hardware, carriages and even coffins and gravestones could be bought. The presentation covers the day this industrious village changed forever nearly a century ago.
Senior Café meets every Monday morning at the Maranacook Middle School cafeteria when school is in session. Attendees are welcome to come for coffee, muffins and social time from 9 to 9:30 before the program begins. Senior Café is a program for people 55 and older sponsored by Maranacook Adult and Community Education. For more information about Senior Café contact Nicole Cushing at 207-685-4923 x1065.
If school is canceled because of weather, the presentations will be rescheduled for a later time.
