AUGUSTA — For the eighth year in a row, the University of Maine at Augusta has been recognized by two national organizations for its exceptional service to veterans, military service members, and their families.
Military Advanced Education & Transition has awarded UMA the designation of a Top School in its 2018 Guide to Colleges & Universities, measuring best practices in military and veteran education. Additionally, Victory Media has recognized UMA as one of its Military Friendly Schools.
Victory Media reviews higher education institutions on their investments in serving military and veteran students, as well as their ability to provide veterans and their spouses with positive opportunities.
“UMA is honored to receive both of these designations for an eighth year,” said UMA President Rebecca Wyke. “This reflects the dedication of the faculty and staff of UMA to be a welcoming community for our military service members and veterans. We are also very fortunate to have Amy Line as our director of military and veterans’ services. Amy is committed to providing support and assistance for service members on their first day on campus right through to graduation.”

The MAE&T’s guide presents results of a questionnaire of the military-supportive policies enacted at hundreds of institutions including private, public, for-profit, not-for-profit, four-year, and two-year colleges. From community colleges to state universities, online universities and nationally known centers of higher learning, MAE&T’s 2018 Guide to Colleges & Universities arms students with information about institutions that go out of their way to give back to our men and women in uniform. This year, institutes were evaluated on their military culture, financial aid, flexibility, general support, on-campus support and online support services.

Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation were evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey completed by the school. For the first time, student survey data was taken into consideration for the designation. Final ratings were determined by combining the institution’s survey scores with the assessment of the institution’s ability to meet thresholds for student retention, graduation, job placement, loan repayment, persistence (degree advancement or transfer) and loan default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans.
