HEBRON — This past summer, the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands staff and contractors reclaimed a nine-acre apple orchard on the Bureau’s Public Lands lot in Hebron.
The effort was described as a “monumental task,” in a recent news release from the bureau. The project was listed as one of the bureau’s highlights of 2017.
The historic orchard had gradually been overtaken by invasive plants, and was virtually impenetrable to most wildlife as well as apple pickers of the two-legged variety, the release said.
After several days of clearing and site preparation, the orchard was seeded with a non-invasive wildlife mix, and will be maintained with semi-annual mowing.
“Many of the trees produce very tasty apples that are once again available for picking by the public and will be enjoyed by many wildlife species,” the bureau said.
