HENDERSON, Nev. — St. Dominic Academy of Auburn and Lewiston was one of 11 schools to win national recognition from The Learning Counsel for its approach to digital education.
The 11 innovative schools and districts “were recognized for their work to not only transform the way they teach, but for their management-level restructuring for digital delivery,” according to a news release from the organization, which is a news media and events organization focused on helping education professionals in the K-12 sector gain research and context on the shift to digital, according to the release.
Attendees at the annual meeting and awards event at which the winners were announced included top education executives from around the U.S., “who gathered to acknowledge exemplary progress and discuss the latest systems, strategies, and tools to build a new model for K-12 education,” the release said.
St. Dominic Academy was the only New England school to win an award. The academy was awarded “for their incorporation of a blended learning model that achieves a ‘just right’ learning level for each student,” the release said. “With the support of The Foundation for Blended and Online Learning and many other stakeholders, St. Dominic Academy has begun to shift from the traditional format of teacher-centered to student-centered learning, which has allowed their students to flourish.
Specifically cited was this summer’s blended learning Summer Bookend Enrichment Program that allowed students to complete four weeks of “face-to-face” and four weeks of online/blended instruction during the summer months. “They are transforming Catholic education in Maine through their digital curriculum strategies,” the organization said.
Teacher and Distance Learning Manager Peter Servidio accepted the award on behalf of the school.
Others receiving wards were St. Vrain Valley Schools, Longmont, Colo.; Pickerington Local School District, Pickerington, Ohio; Lammersville Unified School District, Mountain House, Calif.; Virginia Beach City Public Schools, Virginia Beach, Va.; Logan City School District. Logan, Utah; Emerson Public Schools, Emerson, N.J.; Denton Independent School District, Denton, Texas; Los Angeles Unified School District, Los Angeles, Calif; and Highline Public Schools, Burien, Wash. The Orange County Public Schools of Orlando, Fla., received a Super Hero Award.
