AUGUSTA — The Kennebec Historical society will feature guest speaker Sam Howes, is an archivist at the Maine State Archives, at its December meeting.
Howes will discuss Maine’s role in the relief effort following the Dec. 7, 1917 explosion in the harbor at Halifax, Nova Scotia, that killed 2,000 people.
The presentation is 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 13, at the Maine State Library, 230 State St.
Howes has developed exhibits and preserved the state’s historical records on the topic. While living in Nova Scotia, he became interested in the relationship between the Maritime provinces and the New England states,
leading to research the Halifax explosion and the response from New England, and Maine in particular.
The presentation will be cosponsored by the Maine State Library and free to the public (donations are accepted).
