OTISFIELD — The Otisfield Historical Society’s final program of 2017 is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, at the Otisfield Community Hall.
The main topic will be “William Spurr: Town Historian, Town Character.” Spurr, who died in 1977, was an Otisfield personality important in several different ways, some of which society members will take turns discussing.
Following a brief business meeting, Celeste Hyer will summarize the long history of the Spurr family, who were one of the earliest and most important families in Otisfield. She will also discuss Spurr’s will, which includes a clause leaving an unusual endowment to benefit any Otisfield baby given the middle name “Spurr.”
Next, Callie Zilinsky and Jean Pottle together will recount some of the many stories, some of them probably true, about Spurr as a town character. Last, Jean Hankins will assess Spurr’s importance as town historian, most notably as the author of “The History of Otisfield.”
All are welcome to attend. The society plans to videotape this meeting and hopes those attending will add to an already rich collection of information about one of the town’s most enigmatic figures. Refreshments will be served.
