MaineGeneral Orthopaedics welcomes two new surgeons

AUGUSTA — Elaine Balutis, M.D., and Michael MacKechnie, M.D. have joined MaineGeneral Orthopaedics.
Balutis received her medical degree from University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, completed an orthopaedic residency at Mt. Sinai St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York City, and a hand and upper extremity surgery fellowship at University of California Irvine in Orange. She provides diagnostic, surgical and post-operative care to patients with hand, wrist and elbow issues, performing surgery at the Alfond Center for Health in Augusta and Thayer Center for Health in Waterville. She sees patients at MaineGeneral Orthopaedics’ offices in Augusta and Oakland.

MacKechnie received his medical degree from McGill University Faculty of Medicine in Montreal, Quebec, completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at University of Toronto and an orthopaedic surgery sports medicine fellowship at the University of California Los Angeles. He was one of the team physicians for the UCLA Bruins and Los Angeles Lakers in 2016-2017. He is certified in orthopaedic surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and is board eligible by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

MacKechnie has a clinical interest in providing sports medicine care for injured athletes and is one of only three orthopaedic surgeons in Maine who performs hip arthroscopy, a minimally invasive hip surgery in which an arthroscope is used to examine or treat the inside of the hip joint. He performs surgery at ACH and TCH and also sees patients in Augusta and Oakland.
