AUBURN — The Lewiston Auburn Kiwanis Club shoe drive, which raises money for local Kiwanis programs as well as provide support for programs in developing nations, is underway and will continue to Nov. 12.
The drive, which raises money to help support community programs for local youth, is joined by the Key Clubs at St. Dominic Academy and Lisbon High School this year. In conjunction with Funds2Orgs, the Kiwanis Club will earn money based on the total weight of the shoes collected. The goal is collect a minimum of 2,500 pairs of shoes.
Community members can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes, which can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. Monday through Friday at:
St. Dominic Academy (Auburn campus), 121 Gracelawn Road, Auburn;
St. Dominic Academy (Lewiston campus), 17 Baird Ave., Lewiston;
Lisbon High School, 2 Sugg Drive, Lisbon Falls;
Lisbon Community School, 33 Mill St., Lisbon;
L-A Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce, 415 Lisbon St., Lewiston.
“We had great success with last year’s shoe drive,” said Kiwanis Club President Paul Gauvreau. “We were so happy folks donated last year, and hope they can do so again this year. We know almost everyone has extra shoes in their closets.”
He said that donating is “a win-win for everyone.” The proceeds are used by the club for such projects such as academic scholarships and supporting programs in the area that focus on children and youth.
After the collection, all donated shoes will be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school.
By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the Kiwanis Club, the shoes will be given a second chance and will make a difference in peoples’ lives.
