Food for Thought topic to be Maine’s 19th century female doctors

LEWISTON — Annette Vance Dorey will talk about Maine women who entered the medical profession as physicians more than 150 years ago at the University of Southern Maine Food for Thought luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 9.
Dorey will discuss her research and the book that emerged about the many Maine women graduates of medical schools in a male-dominated profession, “Miss Dr. Lucy Maine’s Pioneering Female Doctors.”
Dorey has been a life-long educator, teaching all grades and ages in various states and nations.

She is a former professor in teacher education at the University of New Brunswick. Since settling in Lewiston, she also has worked abroad teaching educators and students in Lithuania and Poland.
Dorey has also written “Maine Mothers Who Murdered 1875-1925: Doing Time in State Prison.” Her current project is on Maine’s Industrial School for Girls between the years 1872-1976.
The public is invited to join members of Senior College for this presentation at the Lewiston Campus, University of Southern Maine, 50 Westminster St., Room 170. Lunch is $8 by reservation only. Reservations must be made before noon on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Those without a reservation may purchase a lunch and are welcome to listen to the speaker.
