HIRAM– Last year on the third Saturday in October, the Hiram Historical Society celebrated its achievements with a Trash Can Turkey Roast dedication of the installation of Hiram’s vintage road grader and as well as open house of Great Ossipee Museum.
This year’s turkey roast and open house will be held Saturday, Oct. 21, from noon to 2 p.m. at the museum, 20 Historical Ridge (off Schoolhouse Road, off Route 117)
Melissa and Nathan Bliss of West Baldwin are in charge of roasting the turkey. Also included is BBQ pork, ribs, baked beans, coleslaw, cornbread, apple pie and cider — all for $7.
The museum will feature two special exhibits. For the 70th anniversary of the great wildfires of 1947, the society will display photographs and stories of the Hiram buildings that burned and a few that were saved heroically as well as showing a movie of the fires that ravaged Maine.
For the 100th anniversary of WW1, the society has procured photographs of Hiram soldiers and artifacts of what they wore to war — jacket, cap, leggings, gaitors, gas mask, dog tags, etc. — and from the collection of Walter Norris, helmets, canteen, mess kit, grenade vest, ammunition belt, cavalry boots, and more. The stories of two men who returned and made a life in Hiram also will be told.
Also on the agenda, live music by David Foley, owner of Cotton’s Store; a talk by Dave Paro on the history of the road grader; raffles in three great packages.
The event will be held rain or shine, with the meal eaten under cover in the Hiram Community Center; the Museum is a short hop across the parking lot.
