AUGUSTA — More than 100 Cub Scouts, their parents and leaders gathered at Mill Park on the banks of the Kennebec River Saturday, Sept. 23, for the “Blast Off into Scouting at the Cub-O-Rama.”
“This was a great way to kick off the start of a new Scouting year,” said district director Matt Mower on a sunny day that brought Cub Scouts in grades kindergarten through 5 together from many communities for a day of fun outdoor activities.
Some of the events included a dunk tank, building and racing Lego cars, music, Augusta’s police and fire department officers, an obstacle course, science technology, engineering and math. Scouts also built and launched model rockets that flew high above Maine’s capital city.
“It went great,” said Theresa Poirier of Augusta. “We had more than a hundred Scouts, parents and leaders present.” Poirier and Augusta Cub Scout Pack 684 hosted the event, which was open to Scouts from all over Pine Tree Council. “It was a lot of work planning and a lot of fun to run.”
Pat Couture ran the station where Cub Scouts could build and then launch their own rocket. “I live in Manchester,” he said. “It’s nice to all come together for a big event and see the energy and enthusiasm of the program on full display. I would describe it as a great recruiting tool. All the attendees had a blast (pun intended).”
