RANGELEY — The Rangeley Public Library will be offering a free technology series during October and November. Most classes will include some hands-on time, as well as quick reference materials to take away. Each session will end with a brief Q & A session to assist with areas of interest. All classes are limited to 15 participants. Please sign up at the library or call 207-864-5529 to reserve a space in one or more classes.
The series will begin with “Introduction to Your Windows Computer.” Offered twice, this class will cover basic operation of a Windows 10 computer, including managing programs, windows, files and security. It will be held Tuesday, Oct. 10, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., and Thursday, Oct. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. Both classes are identical.
Next is a class called “Internet Basics,” which will be held Thursday, Oct. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. This class will cover the use of common browsers, searching and cloud applications.
“Internet Safety” will be offered Tuesday, Oct.24, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Topics include wireless security, data protection and privacy.
“Using Your Android Smartphone” is another course offered on two dates: Thursday, Nov. 2, from 2 to 4 p.m. and Tuesday, Nov. 7, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both classes will be identical. Please charge and bring your own Android smartphone with you to learn basic functions, installing software, networks and personalization.
“Introduction to Spreadsheets” — focusing on using MS Excel to organize, calculate and present data — will be held Thursday, Nov. 9from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
The final course in this series will be “Introduction to Word Processing,” offered Tuesday, Nov. 14, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. It will focus on using MS Word to create attractive, well-structured documents.
The entire technology series will be presented by library volunteer Scott Hatfield, a full-time Rangeley resident with multiple degrees in computer science. He recently retired after nearly 20 years as chief technology officer for a number of large telecommunications companies.
This series is made possible by a grant from the Maine Public Library Fund, receiving its revenue from Maine citizens making voluntary contributions when filing Maine State Income Tax returns.
