MOUNT VERNON — Operation Brotherhood, a nonprofit organization created to support veterans and first responders, is seeking donations of hygiene items and nonperishable food for distribution at the VA Maine Homeless Veteran Stand Down in October.
Razors, shaving cream, bar soap, lip balm, baby wipes, deodorant, female hygiene items, protein bars, snack items, canned goods and other nonperishable food items are requested. Items can be dropped off from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, 4 to 9 p.m. Fridays and 2 to 6 p.m. Saturdays at the VFW Post 1603, 588 Minot Ave.
They may also be dropped off at The Hair Gallery, Water Street, Augusta; the VFW Service Officer office on the Togus campus; area VFW posts and American Legion Post 153, New Auburn.
The stand down, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, is Saturday Oct. 21 in Augusta. Operation Brotherhood is a nonprofit dedicated to intervening in veteran and first responder suicide, and was created through the vision of Jason Wyman, president of Operation Brotherhood.
A Maine native and Army medic who served in deployments in Iraq, Wyman decided that he wanted to do more for all the first responders, regardless of the critical aspects of their jobs.
He feels that so many groups might fit into the status of the recent published numbers of suicide rates because they are left out, according to a news release from the organization.
