LEWISTON – Christina Parrish, of Brewer, has been named the 2017 Amanda Dempsey Award Winner presented by Amgen’s Breakaway from Cancer.
Named in memory of Amanda Dempsey, the award is given annually to a cancer survivor who demonstrates a passion for helping others with cancer in the state of Maine. It is presented in conjunction with the annual Dempsey Challenge, the primary fundraising event for the Dempsey Center, said a news release from the organization.
Parrish was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on June 16, 2008, and was given three to six months to live with treatment. She founded The Purple Iris Foundation, in Brewer, to help raise awareness and support fellow patients. Today, she is proud to say that she is a nine-year cancer survivor, the release said.
“Christina is living proof that there is hope,” the release said. “She’s a seasoned human services professional, who through her two decades in the field has garnered exceptional experience and expertise working with adults and children with disabilities. She was also the director of a large child care facility, and most recently worked for a major bank in the collections division.”
Parrish will be presented the award on Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Champions for Hope Celebration, which recognizes the fundraising efforts of Dempsey Challenge participants.
Cancer patients, survivors and their families are invited to the Breakaway from Cancer Survivor Walk at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at Simard-Payne Memorial Park in Lewiston. The walk is free to the public, and there is no need to preregister. Participants are encouraged to visit the Dempsey Challenge Information Tent by 9:45 a.m. to be directed to the staging area for the walk. Particpants will include Parrish and actor Patrick Dempsey.
