NORRIDGEWOCK — Area residents celebrated the 45th annual Oosoola Days on Labor Day weekend, and organizers said there was great community support and strong attendance.
Central Maine Regional Airport hosted a day-long event Sunday, Sept. 3, including the CMRA Flying Club hosting a fundraising breakfast. That was followed by the Oosoola Days 5K, won by Wilder Hill Road resident Mark Collard.
The airplane rides offered by Morgan Aviation were popular, and a large group of children ended the day with the drop.Radio station WMME-FM (92 Moose) broadcast live adjacent to Darling’s Ice Cream Truck, raising money for the Norridgewock Public Library. High wind, however, prevented the take-off and landing competitions from taking place.
Labor Day kicked off the traditional slate of Oosoola Days activities, with a parade down Main Street. With much participation by area businesses and groups, the parade was one of the best, organizers said.
In the first-time storefront decorating contest, Ainslie’s II (Irving) on Main Street took first prize.
The parade float first-place winner was Far North Acres Dog Grooming, located on Mercer Road. Oosoola Country Store and Somerset Grange rounded off the top three floats.
Parade grand marshals were Sherri Lewis and Valarie Trial, who have worked to ensure Oosoola Days continues as a tradition within the community. With their steadfast dedication to this event, the children of Norridgewock and the surrounding areas are the beneficiaries of this great celebration, organizers said.
In Oosoola Park, the frog race was well attended, and 114 children signed up to race their frogs. The race takes place around a large circle surrounding the granite post commemorating Big Al Lewis, founder of Oosoola Days.
Norridgewock Sportsman’s Association hosted its annual barbecue as well.
