Vocal Solution to perform Sept. 17

BRIDGTON — The fourth and final concert in its Summer Series of Sunday concerts will be held Sunday, Sept. 17, at 2 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 33 S. High St. The theme for this event is an “Open Rehearsal,” featuring the a capella group Vocal Solution.

“The intention is to keep the mood light and informal, while encouraging people to ask questions and have a conversation while we sing some of our favorite music,” noted singer Kevin Murphy. We’ll have a ‘program’ of sorts laid out, so we know what we’ll be singing. It’s sort of like inviting an audience to a dress rehearsal for a concert — only we’ll be a little more willing to start and stop. Doing it this way accomplishes a couple of things, including allowing us to add a few pieces we might not have added for a ‘regular’ concert. Doing this is about the joy of music and sharing our sound with people — not necessarily about performing things ‘perfectly.’ ”

Vocal Solution was founded and is based in the Oxford Hills area. Members are Kristen Searles (soprano I), Pam Merz (soprano II), Karen Chapman (alto I), Jane Morse (alto II), Kevin Murphy (tenor I), Brian Pfohl (tenor II), Del Leonard (baritone) and Carl Steidel (bass II). Since January 1997, this group has delighted audiences with its varied repertoire ranging from traditional spirituals to contemporary/popular arrangements. The singers come from different professional and musical backgrounds, but all have in common the love of choral music.

Since its formation, Vocal Solution has performed at a number of community events and church services in western and southern Maine including Maine Music Society’s “Battle of the Blends,” Poland Spring Preservations Society’s summer concert series, and as guests of the Yarmouth-based Royal River Chorus and the Portland-based Downeasters Barbershop Chorus. The women often sing as a quartet called The Del-lights, offering a wide range of musical choices from spirituals to Motown to newer arrangements.
