TURNER — Funding this year’s Independence Day fireworks display was a lot of hard work, including hours of preparing and planning, noted the organizers.
Bake sales, toll roads, bottle drives and countless hours going door-to-door, as well as visiting with local businesses, were worth the work, as the event was a huge success, they said. However, it’s not too early to start raising money for the 2018 display.
The first event will be a BBQ and Chili Throw Down, from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 23, at the Boofy Quimby Memorial Center, 96 Howes Corner Road.
People from all over are encouraged to enter their barbecued brisket, pulled pork and chili, competing against each other at this new and fun event. Judging by Androscoggin County Sheriff Eric Samson, Chief Deputy Bill Gagne and communications director Martin Fournier will begin at 1 p.m.
There will be trophies for first place in several categories. A “Peoples Choice” award also will be given out for the best dish submitted, judged by those participating in the event.
Aaron Lord, owner of Terry and Maxine’s Restaurant on Route 4, has offered to provide a few side dishes for everyone to sample. There will be a photo op area with different props as well as a baked goods sale table. The $5 fee per person at the door which includes sampling of all entries, side dishes and beverages.
The next event will be a paint party, directed by Cre8tive Events, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Ricker Hill Tasting Room, 11 Ricker Hill Road.
