TURNER — The Kora Shriners held its sixth annual Kora Kare For Kids fundraising ride-in at Twitchell’s Airport on Route 4.
The fundraiser benefits Shriner’s Hospital for Children in Boston. One of the main features of the event is the 50-mile motorcycle ride around central Maine.
A large portion of the riders are members of Maine’s Masonic Riders Association. Upon returning from their ride, the group has the pleasure of sitting down to the results of a barbeque competition, live entertainment and the sampling of assorted beverages.
This year’s featured speaker 10-year old Turner Elementary student Isabelle Gates, who recently received ear-reconstruction surgery at the Shriner’s Hospital. Though a little shy in front of such a large group of adults, she gave a few words of thanks and kudos to the wonderful medical staff in Boston. Isabelle told me later it was at her parent’s suggestion that she undergo the surgery, but she was happy she had it done. Now that the surgery and recovery are behind her, she intimated the experience was not as scary as she though it would be. Isabelle is the daughter of Brady and Sharon Gates.
In addition to the ride and the barbecue competition, the all-day event features live entertainment, a Kora Korn Hole Tournament, breakfast time with patient testimonials, a Classic Car show, a 15-mile ATV Ride (Turner Timberland Club) and a few relevant vendor booths. The Kora Shrine has raised more than $30,000 during the last five ride events.
